Intensity & Concentration

Last night this seasons road ended at Colleton County. The softball team played their hearts out, but were on the short end of a 1-0 final score. It turned out to be a great season. The girls rose above the adversity of the early season to really gel together and they became a TEAM in all senses of the word. They dug deep and persevered and I think they learned a lot about themselves and each other in the process. I am very proud of the way they have conducted themselves over the past several weeks.

I was looking back over some pictures that I took at the last several games. Krissy really seems to concentrate when she pitches! Look at the expressions on her face. The really funny thing is that between pitches she is grinning from ear to ear, laughing and generally having a good time. But when it's time to throw that ball watch out, because it suddently becomes a life and death situation!

Ball, Ball, Ball and more Ball

Drew's baseball game that was rained out on Saturday was rescheduled for Sunday night. I was NOT happy. Loudly not happy. By Sunday night I had calmed down enough to take him to his game. After church. The game wasn't scheduled to start until 7:30 and didn't actually start until 8 p.m. So, while we were not there the usual 1 hour and 15 minutes before game time, we did make it by about 7:20, so he had plenty of time to throw and warm up. Except warm is not really a word I would use to describe Sunday night. It was plain COLD. Actually, it was so cold that I don't remember anything interesting about the game. I had to use all my energy trying to get/stay warm. Krissy came from small groups wearing shorts. She really froze. David came after Deacon's meeting. We lost the game. We didn't leave the ballpark until 10:15 pm. On a school night.
Monday night Krissy had a game in Columbia against Ridgeview. It was scheduled to start at 8pm. Our JV team was in the third inning of their game as we got there. They were winning 25-2. They called the game on the run rule at the end of the third inning so we got to start a little earlier than 8pm. It was a good game. Krissy was the starting pitcher that night and got the win! Ridgeview's softball field is down at the bottom of a hill and almost looks like it was dug out of the hill. I think the hill was only around two sides of the field though. It was an interesting set up. The visitor's bleachers were directly beside first base and the fence was only about 4 feet tall so if the 1st baseman missed a ball being thrown from short or 3rd base the was no protection for the fans. Thank goodness we have a GREAT 1st baseman who kept us safe!
Tuesday night we played Hartsville again. They beat us 11-2 the last night of the first "half" of our season. This turned out to be one of the most exciting games I have ever seen. We were loosing 4-3 for a good portion of the game. Carson pitched really well but Hartsville has some really good hitters. Krissy came in during the 4th inning and did a great job. She didn't allow any more runs to score, but we were still down by one as we went in for our last at bat. Krissy and Elizabeth were unable to get hits so Carson came up to bat with two outs and hit a double! She was standing on third due to stealing on a passed ball while Chris was at bat. Chris was standing in the batter's box with two strikes when she smashed a walk off home run to left field! We won 5-4!.Photobucket Wednesday night we all four got to go to church and stay the WHOLE time. That has not happened in several weeks. One or the other of the kids has had a game every Wednesday night for the past several. It was like having a night off.
I was really NOT looking forward to tonight. I do not like to miss either of the kids games and tonight I was going to have to miss one or the other. Krissy played in Cheraw and Drew had a game here in Florence. David has had to miss a couple of Krissy's games already so we decided that he would go to Cheraw and I would take Drew to his game. Thank goodness for cell phones. Drew had the greatest hit of his season so far this year! When it left the bat I really thought it was going out. It wound up hitting the Piggly Wiggly sign in center field. Just a tiny bit higher and it would have been over the fence! David called me several times to give me updates from Cheraw. Krissy started tonight and the score was 0-0 the first time he called. (I think it was the second inning) Right after I called him to tell him about Drew's hit, he called me right back to tell me that both our kids were hitting tonight! Krissy had gotten a hit over the second baseman's head. While we were on the phone the next batter (Elizabeth, the awesome 1st baseman) hit a homerun! We were winning 2-0. When I got the next report Cheraw had tied the game, but by the next report we were winning 6-2. (I believe this was the 3rd inning). Carson came in during the 4th or 5th inning and didn't allow any runs! We won 6-2! Cheraw beat us 11-0 when we played them during the first "half" of our season Photobucket
Just in case you are counting......
Our first "half" record - 4 Wins, 7 Losses
Our second "half" record – 5 Wins – 1 Loss and a TEAM that is playing together, supporting each other and having FUN! (I realize the paper says we are 8-7, I honestly can't figure out how they arrived at that.)

Prom

We spent the day getting Krissy ready for the prom. I find it hard to believe that it took ALL day long. She went at 9:30 this morning to have her nails done and get a pedicure. Drew's baseball game was rained out and her hair appointment wasn't until 2pm, so she wanted to go to TJ Maxx and see if we could find a clutch for her to carry. We looked at some last weekend, but never found the perfect one and then with all the ball games this week, we never got around to looking anymore. TJ Maxx had the perfect bag to match her shoes. It could not have been any better if they had sold them in a set. The best part of it was it was only $12.00! We walked by the jewelry counter as we were leaving and she found a ring that she fell in love with. She had borrowed a ring from Maggie, but this one was exactly what she had imagined wanting. There didn't seem to be anyone working at the jewelry counter so I started walking around it and towards the customer service desk to see if they could get someone to come help us. As I walked around the jewelry counter, I noticed a lady sitting in the floor leaning back against the case. Right as I asked her if she was ok she fell over into the floor and was out cold! I told the ladies at the customer service desk and they came over and went into the jewelry cases and started fanning her. Another customer kept saying is she diabetic? Is she diabetic? Is she diabetic? The employees just kept fanning her. Finally she started coming back around and said No to the lady asking if she was diabetic. Then one of the employees asked her if she wanted them to call 911. She asked a couple of times without getting a response and I finally looked at the girl fanning her and told her that I thought she needed to call 911 or someone! They finally called a family member to come, but buy the time we left the lady was carrying on a coherent conversation with us and the other employees. I never did hear what caused her to pass out though.
Krissy was absolutely spastic while she was having her hair done. That girl is the most particular about her hair of anyone I have ever seen. She had this picture of Heidi Klum and Seal going to some awards ceremony and she wanted her hair done like Heidi's was in the picture. I believe she drove Lynne absolutely crazy. She kept telling Lynne HOW to do her hair. I wouldn't be surprised if Lynne refuses to do her hair ever again. It really did look pretty in the end though.
It absolutely monsooned all day long. There was absolutely no way to go to the park and take Prom pictures today. It had never occur ed to me that it might rain so I had never come up with a back up plan. We wound up going to the house of one of the guys in the group that Krissy went to prom with to take pictures. It was ok. They did have room for all of us to be inside, which none of the rest of us did so at least we didn't get soaked. I hope I get to take some more at the midnight breakfast at the church later tonight.

Third time's not always a charm

The girls played their third game of the week tonight. It didn't end up quite as good as the first two, but the score was still better than the last time we played South Florence. It was definantly a success in that the girls seemed to have fun and were supportive of each other, even when they made mistakes. This is a HUGE turnaround from the snarky, snippy meanness earlier in the season. I'm posting a slideshow of some pictures I took tonight. Mostly Krissy pitching. She came in to relieve Carson tonight. They both had a hard time with the umpire tonight. He was not liking their corner pitches. Actually I am not positive that was his problme. He was just plain inconsistant. They both really pitched well though.

Tomorrow we will hit the floor running. Drew has baseball in the morning and Krissy has Prom tomorrow night. Of course it will take most of the day to get ready for that between nail appointments, hair appointments, getting dressed and trying to dodge the predicted thunderstorms in order to take pictures in the park. I am tired just thinking about it!

Starting over in the middle of the season

Our softball season started over Wednesday night. Yes, we are about halfway through the season. No, we don't get to forget about the beginning. After the last game before Easter, our senior pitcher quit. That's all I am going to say about that.

Wednesday night was the first game that we played after the break. We were playing Ridge View. I don't remember ever playing them before so I didn't know what to expect. Krissy came in to pitch in relief after the forth inning. According to the paper she had no runs, 1 hit, 2 strike outs and no Walks. She was 1 for 1 at Bat. It was a really nice hit out to right field.
We won the game 3-2!
Last night we were facing Conway for the second time this year. The first time we played them was in Conway on March 14th. We lost 6-3, after leading 3 nothing in the 5th inning. David and I had to go to the ball field yesterday afternoon to hang a new outfield advertising sign and Krissy pulled me aside and told me that she was starting the game at pitcher. Honestly, she looked scared to death to me! I asked her after the game if she was nervous when she found out she was starting. (This was the first time she had started a game since she starting playing on the Varsity team, she had come on in relief before last night.) She says she wasn't nervous at that point, but did get a little nervous right before the game started.
She will say "Mom, you're so weird" when she sees that I have added these pictures. But, what am I for if not to embarrass my children?
These first two are just pictures of the team lining up on the first base line before the game.

This is Krissy's first pitch, in her first Varsity start. It was a STRIKE!

This is the first batter that Krissy faced in her first Varsity start. Krissy struck her out!

It was a great game. Krissy pitched 4 innings and then Carson came in in relief. She did an awesome job getting the save and we WON 5-3!
